Course Overview

Moral theology is the study of human acts insofar as they are ordered to our supernatural ultimate end, namely, the face to face vision of God Himself. This class with examine not only the supernatural graces and virtues in which God wants us to grow strong but also the many sins and vices which He wants us to eradicate from our souls. Our principal text for the course will be Kevin Vost’s The Seven Deadly Sins: A Thomistic Guide to Vanquishing Vice and Sin, through which we will acquire a practical knowledge of both what “the chains” are which bind us and how best to break them. This course will conclude with an overview of how God’s commandments direct us to the perfection of charity, the mother of all the virtues.

Course Overview

“Sir, we would see Jesus,” was the urgent request from the Greeks in John’s Gospel, and this has been the same desire of the saints and Doctors of the Church through the ages—to be transformed by growth in holiness and purity of heart, knowing that it is the pure of heart who shall see God.
Therefore it is to them that we must look, in their lives and writings, as guidance in our own journey, drawing from the wisdom of men and women from the East and the West: saints such as St. Gregory the Great, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Maximus the Confessor and St. Isaac the Syrian.
Each saint originated from a different vantage point and explored a unique path to holiness, but each conformed to “that great riverbed of Scripture and Tradition.” As that is our universal call and our goal, this class will draw from the well of their wisdom as we, too, seek to be worthy to “see Jesus.”

In Secret Fire: The Spiritual Vision of JRR Tolkien, renowned Catholic author Stratford Caldecott wrote, “Tolkien is one of the great spiritual writers of our time….The symbolic and interior struggle of Good with Evil, of virtue against temptation and weakness, of tradition against corruption and treachery, are represented realistically enough in the legendariumfor us to be justified in seeing these works as a vehicle of great wisdom born of experience and suffering.” In this course, we will read and discuss selections from Tolkien’s masterful epic, The Lord of the Rings, to explore its spiritual depths, while considering the healing effect it can have on a modern imagination that has been atrophied and corrupted in a particular way through today’s secular audiovisual media.

Evangelization and the spiritual life has always been the cornerstone to the mission of Christ and the Church He established. Benedict XVI stated that “the Church exists for worship, to serve the poor, and to evangelize.” Seeking to live out our baptismal vocation of holiness in mission, we will examine the key principles to the spiritual life and how all evangelization springs forth from a life in the spirit. We will also consider the key “thresholds” to evangelization and explore catechesis as the on-going work of the Holy Spirit.
