Description
“Spy Wednesday” marks the infamous day on which Judas arranged to betray our Lord. As we prepare to enter into the Triduum, we would do well to meditate on this treachery. After all, as we can see, Apostolic betrayal is not isolated to the person of Judas Iscariot – but has a way of repeating itself even (or especially) today.
Strangely, ten of the apostles had no idea what Judas was up to. They even go so far as to credit him in the midst of his betrayal with good deeds like “serving the poor”. When they finally see his wickedness, however, they are so scandalized that they flee for fear – repulsed by our Lord’s Cross.
Only one apostle sees from the beginning and so can accompany our Lord in his saving hour. What does he see that the others cannot? And what can we learn from his response that can propel us through the Passion of Good Friday into the Glory of Easter?
